Environmental Sector 3.0: A Concept Paper on Elevating Nonprofits’ Response to the Emerging Environmental Crisis

Climate disruption and the concurrent mass-extinction of species present unprecedented threats to human civilization and the Earth. The environmental movement has hit an apparent ceiling, however, in its ability to mobilize social change at the scale and pace the emerging crisis requires. The urgency of this situation means that the movement must evolve quickly to drive an effective response. This paper identifies needs and gaps in the sector and makes a case for a transformative initiative aimed at boosting environmental organizations’ individual and collective performance. The author outlines a four-phase project that will use established methods to systematically address gaps, design and test new structures for coordinated regional strategy development, demonstrate effectiveness and build a replicable model for wider deployment.
